so it begins

Yes, that's right. Me as Cap'n Crunch! This is actually Jacob's costume, which I made for his office party on Friday - they had a costume contest, and the winner got $100! Sadly, Jacob didn't take the prize - a group of Smurfs won. I'm ok with that, though, because we still have the hat... and having a hat like that around the house is comedy gold. I'm happy with the way the costume looks - it's pretty funny! Originally, I planned to make a jacket in the same fabric with which I recovered the hat. The jacket was, sadly, my worst sewing fail of all time... and it happened on Thursday night (of course). Jacob suggested altering the navy jacket we'd picked up at a thrift store (planning to use it as a base of sorts for the outer costume) so I heated up my trusty hot glue gun and got to work. The colors obviously don't match, but you get the point, I think. Cap'n Crunch! My favorite part is the mustache, I think - two little puffy pillows sewed to some elastic.
Halloween night was fun and chill - our neighborhood is mostly families with kids, so we get a lot of trick or treaters. We got loads of candy and a pumpkin for the stoop (we didn't carve it... I'll get some more pumpkins and maybe a ristra for some harvest-y, Thanksgiving-y decorations). I roasted a chicken; the air was crisp. Charlie was unsure of all the costumed visitors at first, but I gave him a treat each time a group came to the door, and soon enough, he was hanging out on the mat by the front door, calmly watching for the next gang of kids. I could tell when people were coming up our walk because his tail would start wagging like mad and he would look up at the candy bowl.
Sweet boy.
