(Here's the Ravelry pattern page!) It has started to get cooler here in New Mexico (amazing how temperatures in the 70's and 80's feel cool at the end of a high desert summer!) and I am so ready to start wearing my handknits again. When there's a chill in the air, I always have a little scarf or shawlette wrapped around my neck to keep me warm and cozy and provide a little extra style.

Amanda, my friend from Lorna's Laces, wrote to me a few months back and asked if I would be interested in creating a pattern for their new yarn, Honor, an alpaca/silk blend that is available in all their pretty colorways. I really love working with those fibers, and I love Lorna's Laces yarns in general, so I was eager to work with their newest offering. Honor is just lovely - it's light and drapes beautifully, is soft as can be with a slight alpaca halo, and has a very pleasing "squish" factor.

Inspired by the richly textured rock and low-water gardens here in Albuquerque (I got the idea for the shaping while I was out in my neighborhood walking Charlie), Xeriscape is a shaped, scalloped scarf knit in a drapey and luxurious hand-dyed yarn. Worked from side to side and knit in garter stitch, Xeriscape’s scallops are formed with increases and decreases along one edge. The long, narrow, delicately shaped scarf is easy to wrap, tie, and wear in a variety of ways.

Xeriscape is perfect for beginners who are ready to work on shaping through increases and decreases, and still has the thoughtful details needed to make it a breezy, meditative knit for more experienced knitters. The pattern is a 4-page PDF file (1 cover page, 3 pattern pages), which includes color photographs, detailed construction notes, a schematic, and a table with stitch counts so that you can easily keep track of where you are in the pattern.

The amazing Fall 2010 Twist Collective - you've seen it by now, yes? :) I was so, so honored to be a part of it! I was lucky enough to have a design chosen to be included: Promenade! (Ravelry link!) I have been a huge fan of Twist Collective since the very first issue, and to have a pattern in the magazine (in an issue just full of beautiful patterns from designers I admire) is really a design dream come true for me.

Promenade is a Regency-era inspired pullover with a very scooped neck on a slim, empire-waist bodice, puffy little cap sleeves, an a-line bottom, and a separately worked linen stitch tie detail. I've wanted to knit this garment for myself for so long - it's a simple, clean design, but has so many little style elements that I love and seek out in my clothing (seriously - give me an empire waist and cap sleeves and I'm a happy woman).

When my design was accepted, I happily threw myself into a period of research. Gotta love any type of research that allows me to watch Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, and the BBC Pride and Prejudice over and over (and, yes, over) again! I also dove deep into some serious eye-candy paintings from that era:

Sigh. So beautiful, right? I wanted my pattern to be true to the promenade dresses so popular during the Regency era, but without any costumey elements - it had to be wearable today! Luckily, so many style elements we see in those beautiful dresses from the era are nearly universally flattering. To me, a more modern look came through some minor changes, the most important being raising of the neckline (the first version of the bodice that I knit, which was more true to a "period" neckline, was rather saucy by today's standards! I am pretty sure that it would be hard to find modern undergarments that would have worked with a neck that was so very, very scooped). Kate Gilbert (who is so inspiring to work with) and I also both felt strongly that avoiding a white, cream, or pastel color would give the design a more contemporary feel. As you can see from the inspiration paintings above, there were plenty of beautiful rich colors worn by the women during the Regency period.

The yarn I worked with, Madelinetosh Pashmina, is delightful. A handpainted merino/cashmere/silk blend, it is luxurious to be sure... frankly, it's dreamy. It drapes beautifully and still has that great merino squishiness and memory. And of course, since we're talking about Madelinetosh here, the colors are just stunning!

I had so much fun playing with the details of this sweater, and it has been fun to see it added to faves and queues and even see some projects start up on Ravelry! There are many more construction details and notes on Promenade's Ravelry pattern page.

All the photos in this post are copyrighted by the fabulous Jamie Dixon... ok, yes, I'm biased because she is my friend, but she really is such a fabulous photographer. Jamie shot the entire "WWMHW" story of the Fall 2010 Twist Collective... yup, as you've no doubt seen already (if you are a Yarn Person), I got to model a whole story, full of gorgeous sweaters and accessories from some of my favorite designers (seriously), called "What Would Mary-Heather Wear?" Talk about exciting - and flattering, to have been included in such a fun way. More about that day up in the mountains (falling ticks and all!) to come in a few days. In the meantime, here is an outtake from the shoot:

Some things to say!

Running. I'm keeping it up! :) I actually didn't run this week (bad, I know) because it was over 100 miserable degrees here someday. And yes, it's a dry heat... but so is an oven. I don't run in an oven. It's cooling off now (tomorrow is forecast to be a brisk 84 degrees... brrrr!) so I'll be BACK. aw yeah.

Also tomorrow: Convergence! That's the big conference of the Handweaver's Guild of America. Over a week of classes and exhibits and a large vendors' hall. This year it's being held right here in Albuquerque! I'll be hosting a Ravelry meetup in the vendors' hall from 12 - 1 pm. I'm really excited to look around at the booths and any exhibits I can see, also - I recently got a Schacht Cricket Loom and seeing some cool weaving sounds great to me!

PATTERNS. OK. So - this blog (not to mention my Ravelry and Flickr pages) have been pretty light on the knitting so far this year. Part of that is because I didn't really knit, spin, or craft at all at the beginning of the year - when my mom was sick I just couldn't wrap my mind around it. But I have been working behind the scenes for the past few months, and I have some goodies coming up. :)

Xeriscape! A long, shapely, scalloped scarf made in the new Lorna's Laces yarn, Honor. It's a 70/30 alpaca/silk blend and it is dreamy! I finished it at TNNA last month, and it got passed around one night in the Hyatt lounge during "circle time." (The Hyatt lounge is a prime hang-out spot... sofas and lots of room for crafting and talking and a bar right across the way. Aw, I love TNNA.) It was really cool to see the different ways that everyone wrapped it and styled it. When it's no longer 50 kabillion degrees here in Albuquerque, I imagine I'll wear Xeriscape a lot! More to come about the design process and inspiration, as well as more details about the yarn, will come as I am working on...

Xeriscape #2: the variegated version! I want to have this ready for the pattern photos, too. I think it will be a good showcase for variegated yarns because of the garter stitch and shaping in every row. I'm starting the variegated version in a new colorway for Lorna's Laces - Turtle Rodeo. The colors are SO New Mexico! Love 'em.

I'll be working on getting the Xeriscape pattern ready and published within the next couplefewweeks. I have another secret future project I'm finishing first, but

Finally, I have some really exciting news just around the corner... I have a pattern in the upcoming Fall issue of Twist Collective! I am just so excited about this, I can't even tell you. :) The patterns from Twist are being added to Ravelry now (no photos until the big reveal when the issue goes live!) but just seeing my name among all the amazing designers that are in the fall issue is blowing my mind. What an honor!

Yesterday's run (Week 2, Day 2 of Couch to 5K) was hard. HARD. It was hot, and Charlie was more interested in smelling the flowers and bushes and rocks during our walking parts than he was in actually walking, and for the first time I found myself thinking "ugh when is the run part going to end!?" in every run interval.

BUT. I sacked up and did it anyway. As esteem-building as the easy runs have been, I think getting through that hard one was even more important. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

The playlist:

Let Down (Radiohead)

Paper Planes (M.I.A.)

Upgrade U (Beyonce)

Johnny Too Beef (Mos Dub)

Poker Face (Lady GaGa)

Work It (Missy Elliot)

Sweet Dreams (Beyonce)

Love Letter to Japan (The Bird and the Bee)

For my next run (the final run of Week 2, woo-hoo!) I'm going to go out a little later, I think. It cools down nicely here in the evenings and that would make for a much more pleasant run!

summertime

Many hours of knitting, a bit of running, several old movies, a little garden work, and the first grilled meal of the season (the first of many - so much nicer to heat up the little grill instead of the kitchen).

Today I finished Week 1! There was a thunderstorm coming in, I was out in the beginning of it, but it felt so good to follow through and not use that as an excuse. This one was a breeze except for some calf cramps about halfway through (I did about 10 seconds of stretching during one of the walk intervals to work it out). I felt like I could have easily kept running at the end of each run interval... which is great, because next week I'll have to. Har.

Before the playlist - I have to share the sunset photo I snapped two nights ago (just after writing my last post). Just a quick photo taken with my iPhone in my backyard, but oh my gosh - this town really knows how to put on a cloud show!

This weekend there will be so much knitting (no, really - SO much), some gardening, and, as always, lots of cooking. Ah, Friday at beer o'clock is a good time, indeed!

accountability! I am a little wary, as I've never, ever liked running, but one of my goals for 2010 was to run a whole mile without stopping. I've never done that - not even in P.E. testing in school - never. I'd really love to be able to go on family runs with Jacob and Charlie (Jacob has been a runner as long as I've known him, and of course he takes Charlie along with him now). I've heard really good things about the Couch to 5k program so I'm going with that. What I really like is they guide you toward increasing your running time slowly. I never do that, and then I get annoyed with running, and then I quit. So I need guidance!

I am going to put up my playlists here - I think that will help keep me accountable, it will give me a good reference for how my running journey (HAR! I am such a sucky runner that cracks me up) is going, and it will keep me from listening to 99 Problems on a loop for every run. Well, it might not do the last one, but maybe it can help.

SO. Today's run - which, I might add, I did despite not feeling well for 2 days, someone please give me a medal!! - had the following soundtrack:

Lovefool (The Cardigans)

99 Problems (Jay-Z) (I'm not kidding, this one is going to come up a lot)

Bootylicious (Destiny's Child)

Paper Planes (M.I.A.)

Add it Up (Violent Femmes)

Summertime Running (Mos Dub)

Gimme Shelter (The Rolling Stones)

Panic (The Smiths)

Single Ladies (Beyonce)

I am so not a runner and am glad to have stuck with this for even two days, and a little scared to be putting it out there that I'm starting because now I CAN'T QUIT. It's ok though, I feel great at the moment!

Charlie is too cute during the runs. When I am doing the walking part he gets right behind me and every few steps gives the back of my knees the tiniest of nose-nudges. I guess it gives him a nice chance to herd me along. Always working, that dog!

getting summery

We're all happy about it, too.

Knitting and crochet designers around the world are pledging to donate portions of thier pattern sales toward Haiti relief efforts. I'm grateful to have the ability to contribute, and I’m donating 75% of the purchase price of every pattern sold from January 15 - 31 to Doctors Without Borders to assist with their relief efforts in Haiti and around the world. You can find my patterns on Ravelry or here on my website - there are links to Simple Things and the Cotillion Gloves in my sidebar.

I actually increased the percentage I'm donating earlier today (from 50%) because, like many of the designers pledging money from pattern sales at this time, I've been pretty overwhelmed by from this incredible community of ours. When I added my patterns to the Help for Haiti list, I experienced a surge in pattern sales that I honestly didn't expect, and after thinking about it for a while I decided that the best thing for me to do would be to increase the amount that I will donate to Doctors Without Borders from 50% to 75% of the purchase price of the pattern. If you bought a pattern when I had designated 50% of sales, don't worry - I'm doing 75% of all sales from the 15th through the end of the month. I’m definitely not used to selling as many patterns as I have over the last few days, and I am grateful to be able to send a greater percentage of the purchase price. Honestly, watching the news... I'm just so grateful to have water, and a home, and food.

I don't know what I can say about the tragedy in Haiti that hasn't been said or felt by anyone reading this post. It's heartbreaking. I'm grateful to be able to help contribute more than I would normally be able to afford to, thanks to the generous response from the knitting/crochet community; I'm glad to be able to contribute in my own small way. Every little pattern sale is adding up with the others to a larger, greater goal, and I'm so very grateful (I can't say it enough) to be able to contribute in this way. Thank you! Thank you so much.

I'm normally very uncomfortable with sharing the details about charitable donations, as I believe that this is a private, personal thing, but because this donation really comes from the community, from you, I am stepping outside of my comfort zone with this a bit. So far, with the sales from January 15 - 17, I have been able to donate $491.00. From today's sales, I expect to be able to contribute another $150.00 to Doctors without Borders. That's just 4 days of sales. I'm not a wealthy person, and I've never been able to donate amounts like this at once before, not ever, not even close. I cannot express how moved and grateful I am to be able to raise more money for DWB. I can't say it enough: thank you.

New toys

We got iPhones today for early house Christmas presents!
I finished the first Rinconada mitt after quite a few rips and tweaks and swatches. I know it's just a little mitt, but I was being particular! I love the chance we get, in our craft, to rip and redo and make things just the way we want them. I wrote up the pattern and it's now with a group of fabulous test knitters. :) I don't have a scheduled release date but it's exciting to get the pattern ready and work with a fun group of knitters! I set up a Google Wave for the testers, inviting volunteer test knitters who weren't using Wave yet, and it's exciting to use it to communicate with everyone already. I hadn't used it much myself but I can already see that it can be a handy tool for this kind of small-group project - I'll definitely blog more about this as the process continues!

These mitts are going to be a part of a set - the mitts, an earwarming headband, and a cowl, inspired by the beauty of Rinconada Canyon during a winter hike, and also OH MY WORD IT IS SUDDENLY SO COLD HERE.

I've so enjoyed getting back in the swing of blogging and writing in this space. November is ending today, but I know that I will be posting much more regularly here again!

everyday beauty

Even the lines of telephone poles are beautiful agains the sunset sky.
